I visited the Spring Electronics Fair in HongKong and I saw Lytec have been attended with a new product - the Direct to Main EL wire
They claim that "No more soldering" "No more inverter". Those EL wire can be direct plug into AC 100-220V. The brightness is good!
U can find it @ their home page

Re: Direct to Main EL wire
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 6:41 AMActually, you can plug regular EL wire into a 120v plug and it will work. I watched (proprietor of a well-known EL wire sales company who shall remain nameless) plug and entire roll of EL wire into the wall and it glowed. But, it wasn't as bright as when it is run with an appropriate inverter because the frequency of wall current is only 60Hz and EL wire wants (I think) about 300Hz. -

Re: Direct to Main EL wire
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 7:08 PMYou are right, but the point is, the brightness of this direct-to-main wire is much more better than the old wire. It remain high brightness under 50/60 Hz frequence.
I can actually see it glows under the general light of the booth area
