I've got a few extra little ones, good for 20ft or so but I need at least one more of those little Cool Neon black cubes or the grey ones with the rounded edges. Can anyone bring spares to the Playa? I'll gladly barter or whatever for 'em. I'll be bringing my full soldering setup if anyone has need of same. Come find me at the Rue Morgue in the 9:00 mini esplanade.

I don't like the idea of converting AC to DC to AC. It's not so much the (insignificant) energy waste, but the fact that more circuitry is involved, inverters are more complex, and make a high pitch hum; and in the end it produces a fixed frequency.

I want to connect the EL wire to the alternator output, just before it reaches the regulator (which converts it to DC). So what's involved? Can I simply tap into that AC line, and connect the EL wire in parallel with the regulator? Or do I need some components to control the frequency and voltage?

One side effect that I'd like to take advantage of: the blue/green EL wire has a clear insulator, and shows the actual color of the phosphor, which shifts with frequency.. ie.

~600 Hz = green
~2kHz = aqua
~6kHz = deep blue

Typical driver output frequencies are from 400 - 2000 Hz, and typical output voltages are from 100 - 150 volts (rms). I read most of that info here in other threads. (though someone reported success plugging EL wire into a 110 outlet, so apparently the low end of the range is closer to 60Hz).

What frequency does the alternator output? I'm figuring something that matches my RPMs. Ideally, the frequency of the alternator would be converted to match the frequency range of the EL wire, so I can hit all the colors as I go from zero to 90 MPH.

BTW, my regulator gets extremely hot. I'm not sure if that would be an issue.

The trouble is I'm using 1/4 watt resistors and those suckers get *hot*! I plan to grab some higher wattage resistors tomorrow, but how big is big enough? Most likely we'll be running the LEDs off of a car battery; will this affect resistor size or will the larger battery (with same voltage) only affect run time?

The only battery-powered inverter they have claims to power at most 12 sq in. So, I have a couple of questions:

Anybody know of what would happen if I just attach more EL strip, say 24 or 36 sq in? Too dim, fires, apocELypse?

And, what I am doing may in itself be pretty silly: I want polka-dots, so I am spiralling EL strip and masking off everything that doesn't look like a polka-dot. This seems incredibly wasteful to me as most of the strip doesn't do anything even though I'm powering it. Does anybody have a better idea for how to achieve this?
The driver chip was expensive ($21) and the triacs were really expensive ($1 ea) and old (RCA surplus triacs and I couldnt find any datasheets)- these were the big units with the heatsink on the top with the hole to screw the heatsink onto things (at least that's what I think it's for). I noticed others who have been building similar sequencers but using small triacs that look almost like transistors and that run around 30 cents apiece? Also, the optoisolators/triac drivers I used were pretty pricey too.

The reason for wanting to roll-my-own on the inverter is that I would like to be able to exploit the color shift that occurs at different frequencies, and have my sequencer be able to control this color shift. I'm not sure how you'd do this. I suppose I could use one of the microprocessor's output pins or PWM outputs to generate a square wave, feed that to something that can source some current (op amp? power amp ic?) and then step that up through a transformer with about a 1:20 turn ratio.

And then if I do this, how do I estimate (other than empirically) what my minimum and maxumum EL lengths are? Many inverters say you can't let them run without a load. I don't understand why that's a problem. But I'm not really an analog guy, so what the hell do I know. ;) Suggestions would be welcome here!
We haven't quite decided on artistic direction yet, but we have a couple of good ideas. We plan on using EL wire lighting, and given the theme are interested in being as green as possible (well, as green as we can afford).

We'd appreciate hearing from people with experience using 12 volt systems and charging them with solar. I have only a very basic understanding of electrical systems, so would also appreciate pointers to good sources of information.

I've emailed coolneon asking about power consumption of their 12-volt inverters and sequencers. I'm hoping that's a good place to start.

My hope is that I can use one or two deep cycle batteries, charging during the day or on alternate days. Does this sound feasible with an RV-sized PV panel?

Has anyone used Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) to control the brightness of EL wire?

I am designing a sequencer and considering using the PCA 9633 LED driver to switch triacs.

http://www.nxp.com/pip/PCA9633.html

The PCA 9633 is made to drive RGB LEDs but can be configured to drive logic level devices. It operates at 97kHz, far above the frequency of EL drivers, so I am guessing there won't be problems with interference.

I've had problems trying to use open-drain output devices to drive triacs, but the PCA 9633 can be configured as a 'totem-pole' output with 10 mA source capacity- is this enough? Will I still need a resistor between output and triac?

I have found that it matters which leg of the triac is connected to ground, does it matter which lead of the EL wire driver is grounded? Is it always connected straight to ground or is some kind of low-pass filter ever used? I have been using L401E3 TO-92s but am switching to Q4X3 surface mount devices.

By the way, the FreePCB software package is making all this madness possible...

For the past couple months I've been working on an 80-channel EL wire sequencer. (Because nothing exceeds like excess!) It's been an interesting project, but I've managed to get waylaid by really stupid shit, like connector availability, or learning PCB layout. Oh, and here's a great one. For my prototype board, I started with just 16 channels, because if I can get 16 channels to work, I can get any multiple of 8 to work. So after a LOT of PCB layout pain, I finally got a board layed out, and some time ago I decided to use a Rabbit Semiconductor Single Board Computer (SBC) to drive my digital hardware.

This is my first attempt at hardware design. I've debugged a lot of hardware, but never designed any. The digital stuff didn't seem that intimidating, but I've never worked with triacs or triac drivers before. But, whatever, I found some designs on the net and borrowed here and there. So I laid out the PCB board with a connector that matches the Jackrabbit SBC's connector, you know, to make life easy. The boards came back over a week ago. I populated them... and then the SBC died. Just died, Finally, I got them to agree to send out a replacement,, which was supposed ot arrive on Friday but UPS lost the freakin' package. So then I have to get ANOTHER replacement sent out. Ugh.

Anyway, FINALLY, the replacement arrived today, and I hooked it up, and hot diggety damn! It actually WORKS. I'm just beside myself. The first eight channels worked right off the bat.:
Tomorrow I'm going to populate the next eight channels.

Ok, thanks for listening. :)

I've researched EL wire, used small runs with battery power and now have created a monster that appears to NEED (yes we all need EL) more than short pieces.
Here's my problem. I think I've absorbed far too much information. Damn internet anyways. I've completely confused myself and am in need of a little focus.
Project built on a gas powered golf cart body/engine. We've figured that it'll need aprox 200 plus ft of EL wire for trim work and one of those neon undercarriage kits (of something similar) for additional night time "I'm here, don't run into me". May need to add addl lights to appease the DMV hotties as well.
Here's the question: Will I need to run all of the lighting off of an additional 12v battery? If all this lighting is wired directly to the existing battery, will it overload it?
--Got it! I settled for some 1.5mm dia stuff, as this works out to be just a hair smaller in diameter than a common 1/16" drillbit. The stuff's a little thicker than I'm used to using but it transmits light just fine. The spool was 700m, or a little over 2,100ft so I've got fiber to burn, so to speak. Including tax, shipping, etc the stuff wound up costing about $.22/ft so if anyone makes it to my digs in SR I'll spool some off for ya. Plan B: I'll probably keep the spool in my truck when I go to various Burning Silicon or BM functions so come find me if ya want some. I'll sell it at what it cost me; I figure a fifth of the quantity I had to buy will last me forever, so the rest is up for grabs. Would be curious to know, natch, what kind of stuff gets made with it, so keep in touch and post if anyone makes anything neat?

It is a good day, just ordered over 400ft of elwire in all its glorious colours and sizes and that should cover all my costume, art and importantly boat/ home decoration needs. Now the challenge I present you is to work out the most effecient (cost and power wise) way to power 120ft green and 120ft of red 5mm High Bright Hella Phat that will be mounted on the outside of my boat.

Ok the design I am going for is http://www.flickr.com/photos/dougaldutch/115781149/in/set-1124623/ and that basically outlines windows and doors, continues round to the other side and across the front and back (30ft long by 10ft wide). Not looking for any sequencing or strobe/ blink modes.

So how would you do it? 2 Invertors or one chunky one? Any experience with powering this sort of length? Problems encountered? Any ideas on how to attach to the steel? It is a canal boat so no rough seas are predicted, but weather can be fairly harsh.

Interested to know what you knowledgable blinky people think

Length of area to be covered is about 30fta nd the boat is 10ft wide.

At last year's Burning Man I hit on the idea of running EL wire through acrylic tubes which I had lined with parchment paper (the kind you get on a roll). It didn't dampen the brightness much at all, and the result was a nice glowing tube about 1 1/2" wide.... Super cool!
Just thought I'd share, and I was also wondering if anyone out there knows how to make clean bends in that kind of tubing? The problem with that of course is the diffuser, I tried a few things before I found out paper worked best. I don't know how it would take a curve though.
that CoolNeon and Coolight both sell the real Elam/Lytec stuff, and it looks
like thatsCoolWire sells "WANYU-EL elite" wire (in slightly different diameters),
and it's about the same price.

Who else is there, and which stuff do they sell? Is there someone selling
the inferior wire at significantly lower prices than the real stuff? I wouldn't
mind having a source of "cheap stuff to experiment with" as well as "the
good stuff", especially if I better understood exactly what the tradeoffs

I placed an order over a month ago, in time to get el wire for Burning Man, but it has been delayed and I have recieved no notification whatsoever. I would not order from El Wire Cheap again, and I would recommend anyone reading this to do the same.
I have this vision and want to know if it's electrically do-able.
I want to cut out the outer (peripheral) wall of a home made irrigation tubing hula hoop, in sections, leaving enough full sections every 6 or 9 inches to keep it stable so it doesn't flop. This would enable the viewing of EL wire in the tubing while hooping.
I am wondering if there is a way of wiring this with two AA batteries inside (I envision batteries on opposite sides of the hoop for balance with a traveler wire as needed). Is that all that is needed to create a steady glow hoop??
And ideally, I would want to make the wire strobe in the hoop.
Should I cannibalize a control unit, or is there another way to strobe the wire?? I have these control units I bought from cool neon that hold two AA batteries and have the switch for strobing or steady light. I haven't taken one apart yet, but whatever I come up with, it would be good to be able to fit it in the tube and just have a switch accessible from outside.
Any ideas from you electrically enlightened ones!!

Thanks, Nicholas
